Comparison
This assessment compares enterprise wireless LAN (WLAN) vendors by evaluating how well they satisfy the
requirements for three common use cases: network design, network management, and problem diagnosis. This
assessment not only defines key evaluation criteria that will satisfy the use-case requirements, but also highlights
vendor differences. The evaluation criteria provide a touchstone that enterprises can use to help create a WLAN
request-for-information (RFI) document and determine a vendor short list.
Each vendor received a copy of the use-case requirements and subsequently performed a two-hour web
demonstration that showed how they would satisfy each of the requirements. Each vendor also took a survey that
focused on topics such as market leadership, customer support, sales support, and product capabilities. Finally,
each vendor provided Gartner with access to its product for follow-up evaluation.
Network Design
This use case provides a basic analysis of vendor network-design capabilities using 802.11n equipment. For
additional information on 802.11n, refer to the following series of four reports: “802.11n: Beyond the Hype
analyzes 802.11n technology; “802.11n: The End of Ethernet?” compares wired Ethernet with 802.11n; “802.11n:
Enterprise Deployment Considerations” analyzes 802.11n deployment issues; and “802.11n: Impact on WLAN
Management” analyzes 802.11n impact on WLAN management tools.
A detailed analysis of the quality of network-design tools is beyond the scope of this assessment. Each vendor
was given a floor plan and asked to satisfy these requirements:
Provide pervasive wireless coverage for the provided floor plan (see Figure 1).
Design a network that is optimized for data applications. (Vendors were required to describe how they would
modify the design if they needed to support voice and data applications.)
Design a network that uses 802.11n access points (APs) and both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
Design a network that provides redundancy for a single AP failure.
